Need some help with a Subaru
I could use a little help with a problem with my sweeties Subaru. She has been noticing an increasingly loud whinning noise during acceleration with her 2001 2.5l Outback. She took it to a Cottman's and they told her it need a $2600 "tranny rebuild". She took it to an Aamco and they told her $2000 plus parts and it required a front diff rebuild. Both shops said don't drive it anymore cuz if it totally stops it could mean an engine service as well.
?????
Now I'm not a Suby guy, but when does a front diff rebuild (or complete tranny service for that matter) turn into an engine overhaul? They didn't say front CV joints or even half shaft replacements, they just said "transmission rebuild" and "front differential rebuild".
Can anyone in the family shed a little light on this for us? And maybe connections to a shop that we can trust for a proper diagnosis and repair?
Thanks all

I'm no mechanic either but I would think that enough resistance in a diff could cause additional engine wear. Definitely not something to let go on too long.
Is it possible to just disconnect the front diff and let it be a rear wheel drive car, or does the the rear get driven through the front? I know Subs are "all time all wheel drive", but maybe the drive shaft could just be removed for that axle, as a temporary fix. You'd definitely want to cap any openings to keep them from getting crudded up.

why not just find a used tranny and get it done for half the cost. The last shop my brother went to 2 weeks ago gave him the option for the spendy rebuild $2200or just get a used one put in for $1200. Forgot what their warrenty was though.

Are all the tires within the specs of the car as far as the tread wear? If it's not, that's how you ruin the diff. Subies are really sensitive when it comes to tires not having certain depth with one another. Look in the manual and it should tell you what the tread depth they should be.

Hey, call Sherry @ Just Right Auto Repair. 360-695-2011. I've been checking around the people that I know in the community, and this place kept coming up as the first choice over and over again. Almost everyone that I spoke with said that they're not only the best, but one of the most honest.
