From Gleneden you can hit a good portion of the coast. Right to the north is Lincoln City (lots of shops, good beaches and food.) I have eaten at a little place in north Lincoln City called Little Sambo's. It has a good variety of seafood and traditional american fare. Just as you leave Gleneden heading north there is Mo's Seafood and Chowder House, it is an award winning restaurant for their Chowder.
Even further north on the 101 Tillamook and Seaside. Tillamook is not on the coast rather inland on a bay, but it has a couple of touristy type things. It has an air museum that is housed in an old WWII era Air Ship hangar. Lots of cool old planes and vidoes talking about the area and its use during the wars. Then in the northern part of the town is the Cheese factory where you can take tours and watch the workers make the cheese. There, they have a store and small eatery where you can get all sorts of food.
More north is the town of Seaside. strictly aimed at the tourist trade. Small shops with lots of trinkets that promote the coast and Oregon in general. It does boast the end of the Oregon Trail and there are a couple of historical museums in the area. There are several decent restaurants on Main St. but not a lot.
To the south you can go into Depot Bay or further down to Newport Bay. Newport is home to the Oregon Coast Aquarium (where Keiko from Free Willy was rehabilitated). They also have a historic water front with small shop and eateries. When I am down in Newport I always go to the Rogue Breweries, which is near the aquarium on the south side of the bridge on the 101. It has a big red silo that can't be missed and it has great food and even better beers.
As for driving, the 101 poses it own hassles; two lanes, limited speed, lots of traffic. My suggestion is finding one of the highways that heads back inland toward either Eugene or Portland. You will get some nice curves and depending on traffic you should be able to get some speed up. Just keep a wary eye for police. Are you planning on going up to Astoria? We just took a club drive out there and there are some awesome roads to drive.
Just some ideas for you to ponder.

Of course one of the finest places to eat on the coast is Salishan Lodge, right there in Gleneden beach. The fine dining is top-notch with some of the finest chefs in Oregon.
If you are there for a Sunday morning, they have a wonderful brunch buffet.
Have fun!

Hello, I'm the husband of gpwuster aka Sandy..
So far the trip has been great other than the deer.. 3am sunday a deer jumped off of the hill on to the middle of the road. Only light damage to the front bumper but the right fender is toast, light scratches on the door..
The weather was great the first few days and has been foggy since..
Anyone going for a coastal drive Saturday?
Thanks
Mac

I am sad to hear about the deer incident. That can be a problem up here in the NW
I wish I could come out and cruise the coast with you but I am too far away
Good luck with the rest of your trip

Still can't get used to the fueling law.. hehehe
Also, my condolences go out to you as well about the rough trip. I know what it is like to get into an accident on your vacation miles away from home. Our S was rear-ended in Ojai on our June/July vacation. Had to drive 900+ miles with a twisted trunk and smashed lights. Good luck on your trip back.
It's hard to break habits.. hehe
Hopefully your car is all better...
I had to actually kick the fender in so I could get the passenger door open. The damage would have been way worse if I wasn't looking out for them. I think it would have ended up going through the door window and possibly the top?..
Thanks
Mac
