Downtown Triathlon
With nothing better to do to fill my free time, I might as well put on in my calender another race, the May 23rd Baldwin Park downtown triathlon. It's not an Olympic distance race, but at least it will keep the rust from collecting. Besides with summer fast approaching, it will soon be almost too hot to race Olympic distances without getting beat up by the sun. I've decided to fill in my schedule with some shorter races. I'm going to weed out a few triathlons from my typical race season since the last few years I've ended up doing almost a dozens races a year.
If I can continue to work on beating down Nancy's resistance, she'll let me do the Miami Marathon, then another Half-Iron triathlon and finish next season with an Ironman distance race...
I took three days off after St. Anthony's, and last week a started with my program again. I'ld like to lighten up even more as I get ready for a marathon and Half-iron. Over the next few weeks, I am going to make a concerted effort to limit non-essential calories. I've already cut down on most of my weakness--ice cream and Tequila. So here goes round two--monitoring of calorie intake and output. My weekday workouts average about 1200 to 1500 calories output, and weekend workouts burn between 3000 and 4500 calories a day. Now if I can cut down the intake without losing energy!

Oh ... and I'm pretty sure Tequila is 'low-cal'

Nancy probably wants to encourage me to do as much carbo packing as possible. The last time I did a marathon my weight dropped down into the 150s. There is nothing like successive 20 plus mile runs to shed pounds.
Since the season started, I've found myself having to get almost an entire new wardrobe of suits. Before St. Anthony's I got some new casual clothes, and now two and a half weeks later they are too big. I do too much weight lifting to get as low as into the 150s, but if I drop another 15 pounds I am down into the 160s.
My problem is that I tend to lose so much weight so quickly (and sometimes I get so tired that I just don't eat) that I find myself losing energy during workouts. I remember some real tough long bike workouts in Lake County when I haven't eaten enough.
To do and Ironman, I need to plan on some weeks with 20 to 25 hours of cardio. The run shouldn't be a problem because I come from a tack background, and I've done pretty fast marathons and half-marathons. Figure average run mileage of about 40 miles per week. Ideally my long bike rides need to get into the 150 to 175 mile range. Expect an average of 200 to 250 miles per week. Long swims are probably in the 4500 yard range with a weekly total of 12,000 to 15,000 yards.
150lbs?! Wow. That is some serious calorie burning you're doing.
I start this week with some mild cardio build-ups. I'm going to do my best to be under 200lbs before i turn 40 ... and be healthy at the same time.
Good luck in preparing/conditioning for your next event.
