Default German Car Repair

The Oldest Laundry girl's Passat makes a loud clicking sound when the wheel is turned to the left. It seems more noticable in the morning. I am thinking that it may be a C.V. joint that has to be replaced. It has 120,000 miles. I am happy with the dealer's service shop, but I want to cross shop price with some independent repair shops. Does anyone have a recommendation or recommendations on decent German car repair shops? I would rather have the work done right, so for me price is not the primary consideration.

Thanks.

Magic Mechanic on Lee Road. You can email them, and they will give you a price quote.

I have 2 places..

www.Europeanautotuning.com... 321-663-8874 .. ask for vidal .. he is the owner.. tell him RJ with the TT sent you..

Or call my friend Juan .. 407-590-5108.. he will come to your house and look at your car if you aren't to far from him.. tell him RJ sent you. .he will be cheaper, but I dont know if you feel comfortable with someone going to your house..

both are Audi/VW certified mechanics.. Juan still works at VW on OBT. Vidal now owns his own shop in east orlando

They installed my motor in my old TT.. and THEY ARE GOOD AT WHAT THEY DO.. and they price it right.. my neighbor still has Juan go to his house to work on his car.. unfortunately, I got to know these guys TOO WELL because my Golf and TT were always giving me all kinds of problems .. no more german cars for me!!

Yep, sounds like a CV joint. Usually, from what I have seen, the boot near the wheel gets a rip around the middle, inside one of the grooves. Once it's making noticeable noise, it's usually too late to simply patch. I had to replace both of my front axles about a year ago. If it's the B5.5 (01-05) with a 1.8T, I know I have all the tools to swap the axle. I got mine from a local buddy new for about $60 or $70 for each side. It took about 2 hours to do each side with hand tools...maybe a little less.

The only tool you'd need that wont be in a standard tool set is the triple-square (12 point) star socket to remove the axle from the transmission. I have this part if you want to do it yourself, or if you want me to come over and do it (or we can do it at my house, wouldn't matter to me). Or if you would rather take it to a mechanic, that's totally understandable also. Just go in there knowing what the parts cost, so they don't rip you off. Figure they should charge about $70 for the axle itself and another $10-20 if they replace all the triple square bolts.

The place RJ mentioned (European Auto Tuning) does good work from several people I know, if you would prefer to go the shop route.

Jay ... i know of a really good (but small) shop here if you need any second opinions. He typically does mostly Merc's and Audi's ... but, I know he's good with Volkswagen too.

just another option ... hth
