Default Orlando to Tally

Hold on to your seats kiddies because the news I am about to reveal will bowl you over.

I have go to Tallahassee for a business trip for a few days next week, and I am probably taking my S. Yes...yes...I know what you are all saying, "How can I even think of doing that! Your weekly mileage average of 40 miles per week will be blown away. How can you even think about making such a long and dangerous trip through the wild outbacks of Florida? Isn't this a trip better suited to a mode of transport with Panzer-like durability? Oh say, a Fresca Green 1.8 T Passat 5 speed with a butter leather interior?"

Don't tell anyone, but I was even thinking of engaging the V-tec, as opposed to shifting at my usual shift point somewhere between 3500 and 4000 rpms.

So here's the deal. Does anyone have any suggestions for good backroads from here to Tally? I live in Winter Springs and thought about going to 75 to around Wildwood and then cutting over to the west side of the state and then up U.S. 19 to Tally.

I would get to Gainesville on the Interstate, then take Hwy 26 west, then Hwy 19.

Not to put a damper on this idea but:
(1) It's 4 hours on the Interstate, maybe 5+ hours the other way
(2) The "scenic" route isn't all that scenic. I've taken 19 from Tally to Crystal River and back and to be honest you won't miss much by going the "direct" route.

Any good roads around Tally? Better yet, are there any good restaurants in Tally? I hate going up there when the legislature is in session almost as much as I hate going up there to deal with the legislature because the few decent places to eat---and they are few indeed--are always jammed with legislators, wonks and lobbyists.

Have fun J! I have been through Tallahassee once and took the interstate the whole way so I am unable to recommend anything suitable for you.

880 miles (give or take a few)
Fort Lauderdale to Knoxville, TN for WTD.

A few of the Miami members have me beat in terms of mileage for the trip.

Lived in Tally for 11yrs...I agree...there's not much of a senic route worth driving.

As for nice roads while there...tons of canopy roads...very pretty but not terribly curvy. Try Miccosukee Rd and Old St. Augustine Rd...Old Bainbridge Rd has some nice spots too. There's really only one fun curvy road safe enough to have some fun: Lakeshore Dr.

For dinner...one of the best sushi restaurants I've experienced is on the north end of Tally...Kitcho. There's also a terriffic Indian place called Samrat...run by a little Sikh gentleman who calculates your bill in his head and on a palm size notebook. An interesting bistro/outdoor cafe is Food Glorious Food. For breakfast, one of my favorites is Jenny's Lunchbox.

A run down to Wakulla Springs is always fun if you have time. There is a restaurant in the old hotel...but it's only fairly decent food...the atmosphere is just old Florida.

An interesting site to stop into see, if you haven't been before and if you have time on the way up or back, is Ichetucknee Springs . It is a bit of a detour...it's northwest of Alachua and southwest of Lake City. Beautiful park though.
