Well, I FINALLY got my baby out of storage last weekend, and the first thing I notice,on my home from Cornwall, was...."man,I need a new sound system"
So...after shopping at a few stores,I had prices quoted from $800 to $3000 for a half decent system.
Has anyone installed an after market stero and if so..where and how does it sound? Does anyone have mounted speakers in the back? Does anyone have a sysytem that can also play the iPod?
Kawal, welcome back! We haven't heard from you since our detail day / drive last spring!!!
My car has rear speakers and an aftermarket deck, I also have a holder an input for a palm which works similar to a IPod attachment.
I don't think you have to spend anywhere near $3000 for a good system, rear speakers are around $200-$300, maybe change the front ones for a couple of hundred, and get a new deck for $300 or so. You can also optionally add a subwoofer for a few hundred as well.
You can purchase the DCI if you want your dash controls to work with your new deck as well, you will need a new deck supports an infrared remote control.
You can make the lucid rear panels with a dremel, it's not that hard.
I thought that Lucid also developed a hardwired DCI for certain models of head units. The infrared one has a delay. There was also another board member that did a mod that added more functions to the stereo button. He essentially turned it to a "hat control" or a mini-joystick. Check out the electronics forum for more stuff.
The Lucid panels are just stock ones with pre-cut holes. You can do it yourself if are DIY person. If don't mind the actual power and quality of the output, the stock head unit has 2 unused outputs that can be used for the rear for OEM head 4 speakers.
Personally, I would just upgrade the head unit with better fronts for now. Just make sure you have the appropriate amplifier for the speakers you're going to get. Higher end speakers require higher power amps, the really loud ones will require an external power amp.
Good to see you on the boards.....I was thinking about updating the stock system as well. I haven't decided on a deck but I have been thinking about Spods. I'm not sure if you know about them but they are the headrest speakers that fit perfectly in the plastic headrests. They sell for about $250 US and can accomodate reart speakers. Gropos bought a set and put them in. They also work to cut wind resistance in the cabin when driving with the top down. I am also going to change the door panel speakers and look at also an amp an perhaps sub as well.
Hey Guys...well I did alittle research and broke down and bought a system. Had 2 MB Quarts speakers and tweeters installed as well as a sub woofer, with 2 amp running each.
Again, thru asking people in the car audio business...the guy to have it installed works now at Futur Shop. His name is Shone. This guy is a WEALTH of information...who had his own shop but "woooed" over by Futur Shop. He gets paid a salary and NOT by comission,( which means that he is there to work, and not to get all your money) and his custom work is simply amazing!!!!! He has a GREAT reputation around town for custom work. And has the pictures to prove it.
Basically all he did was use the trunk space to put in 2 amps, a sub-woofer and designed it so that I can still use the trunk. He custom built a "floor" that goes over the existing spare tire tool kit.
Again, if anyone is interested, this guy works at the Futur Shop at South Keys. Avoid if you can, Derand( bad bad reputation in the police world) Langlois is great but little bit on the pricey side. Car-Toons has gone out of business.
Nice! Congrats, I've heard some bad stuff about future shop south keys, a couple of guys got their systems stolen from their car in their driveway the day AFTER getting a system installed there. Coincidence MAYBE.....
