Default Valve Retainer Change

Hi

Need to get the valve adjusted and the retainers switch from AP1 F20C to AP2 F22C (retainers and keepers). Has anyone done this around Ottawa? I am looking for a shop/mechanic reference.

I would recommend asking for Jason to do the work. He does all work on my S2K and is a solid guy, he's a good friend of mine too.

I spoke to Jason. Estimate is ~2 hours for valve adjustments but he was un-sure about changing the valve train retainers and keepers.

He was not aware of the AP1 problems with retainers on the intake, apparently not something they have encountered. This is a well enough documented problem, usually associated with mechnical over-rev through early down shifting. I'll order the parts through hardtopguy then get it done.

I have heard of many that actually tracks their cars on a regular basis running the stock AP1 retainers without issues. I have concluded that the main cause is related to mechanical over rev. Just inspect them and if they appear to be ok, i wouldn't bother.

On another note, if you have an MY00 or MY01, you should look into getting the oil jet banjo bolt replaced.

I replaced those bolts, the scariest thing I have ever done.

Oh and oil dripping on your head not fun.

How come it's scary? I have read up on the DIY for this procedure and it looks quite straight forward (with the exception to the bolt for cylinder 1). But i have swapped engines, brakes, cams etc in my car so i am somewhat familiar with wrenches and sockets. Is there something I should know? I will be looking into this project next year. I just did a full amsoil oil change and don't want to drain the oil again. I will get this done either in the fall or next spring with the next oil change.

That cylinder 1 bolt is a HUGE PITA. It was scary because you can't feel it so you can't tell if you are threading in straight or not.

There I was threading the bolt in and it was getting tighter and tighter than BOOM it slips to no resistance, I almost crapped my pants! Then I turned a little more and it was fine, what had happened is the banjo fell out of the hold and was causing resistance then popped into place.

You can't see or feel what is going on so I thought I stripped it. The next 3 were a piece of cake and then it was done.

Well no-one seems to have done the retainer change in this area. Don't have the tools so I'll keep looking.

Was not considering doing the banjo bolts unless I switched to forced induction. That said, the Kraftwerks supercharger kit looks really good. After so many years, maybe I'll join the FI gang.

Off to Pittsburgh today for the vintage Spring Fling meet, then on to Chicago. ~about 3K kms .
