Default abs problems

my car is having an abs light come on n stay on for like 5-15 minutes of driving then off. its on n off randomly n has been like this all week. has any1 ever had this problem??? i look at all my wheels and it seems to come from the rear left driver side wheel. all of my lips on the wheels are shiny new except for the rear left driver side. there seems to be a ton of brake dust on it and the rim itself is hot when i touch it with my hand while all the other wheels are cool to touch... i dont get it??? what could be causing the rear wheel brake to lock up??? it is shedding alot of brake dust just from that 1 wheel. if any1 has ever had this problem please chime in anytime....

at first i thought maybe bad brake pads iono??.... so i just changed them yesterday. i dont really see anytihing wrong when i was changing it. in fact all the pads were still good n had alot of meat. so i said fawk!! ima jus change it any way since i already got all 4 wheels off. the car has been like this for the past week before and after the brake pad change. i have no idea what it could be??? will re bleeding the brakes do anything??? iono. im runing out of idea's.....

all i know is the rear must be locking in order for the abs light to kick on and that must be the reason whyy it is shedding brake dust like crazy....

if anyone has ever had this problem or think they know what it might be or how to fix please speak up...... thanks,.... mike

Could it be the abs sensor? My abs light is also on, and in my case it is because of a bad abs sensor in the front (forget which side).

It has now been on for two years--definitely time for me to fix it and get the abs working again lol.

Probably a stuck caliper. Had it happen to me. You can either rebuild the caliper or buy a new or reman one for pretty cheap. There's always fleabay...

I topped off the brake fluid so I doubt that's it. What happened when Ur calipers got stuck??? Same symptoms like me??? Massive heat coming off wheel n rotors n a shit load of brake dust???? The abs light goes on when either the brakes lock and abs try's to unlock it or it has a sensor goes out. How did your caliper get stuck?

yes, massive heat like the brakes are 100% on all the time while driving. the wheel will get so hot you cant touch it. compare the temp to the other side of the car same wheel.

and the abs tank and master cylinder are not the same thing. but this doesn't seem to be your problem.

calipers get stuck for a multitude of reasons. best to replace/rebuild the entire thing. you might be able to disassemble the brakes like you were doing pads and find that the slider pins are just jammed stuck. if thats the case, just clean thoroughly and grease even better and re-assemble.

I had something similar as well. My calipers were stuck but my ABS never came on. I replaced my caliper pin bolts and it solved my problems.

So by just replacing the bolts that swivel the calipers should fix my problem.? It's the the 2 bolts that swivel so I can slide in new pads right? And where is this abs tank located?..

I don't think I have a problem wit da abs but I do believe my calipers are getin stuck. That's probably why I get so much heat n see soo much brake dust. Hey thanks again guys for helping a fellow s2k out

yes both bolts need attention. when you open the caliper like a clam shell, try sliding it back and forth. that should instantly tell you which pin if not both is stuck.

id highly suggest you take of the caliper and bracket and do this job on a bench. you'll have to get all the old grease (which is now cement) out of the old bracket with a q-tip, carb cleaner and a bad attitude.

use a high quality high-heat grease when you do this. if you are at the parts house and are standing in the grease aisle debating 3 dollars, buy the better grease.

Hey street ruler thanks for the help n tips. Ima do it when I get my car back. I just dropped off my car to get a headgasket replaced, fab up a new 3" down pipe and retune it. What kinda grease do you recommend? Any specific brand or type? Do I have to replace the bolts to?
