Default Brake Caliper Rebuild

I have a track day at PIR this Friday, so I started my own safety inspection tonight.

I haven't checked on my piston caliper seals in over 6 months. I looked at them tonight, and about 1/8 of the circumference of the seal has disintegrated (on both front calipers).

I am going to see if I can pick up the caliper rebuild kits tomorrow.

If I cannot get the kits in time, do you think it will be OK to still run the car on Friday? My gut feeling is the caliper pistons will be OK, since it's only the outer seal thats gone. I can rebuild the whole thing after the track day.

I also don't have a compressor to blow out the front pistons, so I may be SOL.

Thank you for your time.

It is a total non-issue. Just be sure to clean the calipers up real good when you replace the seals and try to stay out of loose dirt this week.

Thanks Jerry!

I called a couple of Honda dealerships and they don't have the rebuild kits in stock anyway.

I have a kit sitting in my garage, if you are in a rush.

Thanks for the offer, but I'll just order them online, since I need to order other maintenance related items.

I don't think I'll have the time to rebuild the calipers before the track day. Plus I don't have an air compressor, and I hear you can't get the front pistons out without blowing them out anyway.

I always have bad luck working on the car right before a track event, so I'll leave well enough alone and just do the rebuild later this weekend.

BTW-does 1 rebuild kit/packet, have quantities to fix both calipers? Or do I need to buy a kit per caliper?

One kit per caliper.

You can remove the piston by hand without an air compressor. Alternately, it is even easier if you simply remove the brake pads and pump the brake pedal. Two pumps and the piston will pop right out of the caliper. Your clean-up needs may vary.

I've been running with melted boots forever. They're just dust covers, no?. Does anyone replace these regularly? If so, why bother?
