Default Braking vs Engine Compression when going downhill?

There's a pretty steep hill by me that's about a 1/4 to 1/2 mile long (for those in Portland, it's 113th on the wetside on the right coming down Cornell before you get to Cedar Mill area). The speed limit is 35. When I leave the car in 3rd, I can go down the hill at about 40 without touching the brakes. If I put it in 4th, I need to brake down the hill.

So, which is better? Why? Just curious.
