Put car in 1st gear, hand brake off, jack up right rear only, try to turn wheel both ways, what do you get?
Lower right rear, jack up left rear, try to spin wheel, what do you get?

In each case, if the wheel spins, note if axle spins, if it does, note if drive shaft spins.

RR in air:
Wheel moves? Y
Axle moves? Y
DS moves? N

LR in air:
Wheel moves? Y
Axle moves? Y

but doing that i do note more play in the L axle. It slightly moves fore and aft with the torque.

 

When you say wheel moves are you saying you can spin it as much as you want and in either direction?

 

...... if so, sounds like one of the inner CV joints is toast and a good bet is the left one based on your "play" statement.

Yes, but the car wants to roll off the jack when i actuate the RR wheel in the air. Doesn't feel unstable when i move the LR wheel.

As a result i've moved the RR wheel less, but enough to make it make the noise.

 

then the left inner CV it is since the right side has to go through the unloaded Torsen which is the resistance you are feeling, I think

 

Fun, fun. Guess I'll wait for anyone I know to get off work so we can prove it thoroughly while they run the motor and I watch and see what moves under real power before I start tearing on it.
