Default Extended warranties

I just bought my second S and I thought it would be a good idea to invest in an extended warranty due to the fact that if something goes wrong, I don't want to be stuck with a big scary bill ie: a blown motor. My last S had 46K on her and I hadn't had any problems. I guess I'm just a little paranoid especially when we're looking at around 10G's for a new motor. Did most of you buy the extended warranties and if so have you needed to use them? If so what areas with the car have you had problems with? Thanks in advance.

I plan on keeping it for awhile, maybe past 85-95,ooo miles. I'm currently using as my daily driver putting around 200 miles on it per week. I'm currently looking at an alternative daily driver as to avert stacking the miles up. I'll be autocrossing and giving pacific raceway some track time this year. I drive the car pretty sensibly but open it up when traffic permits.

I figure that if I blow a motor it will probably be on a track somewhere, and the extended warranty folks will claim "abuse" and not cover it anyway. The brake ducts kind of give it away.

Besides, what are the odds that my car will stay unbent (or should I say "reunbent") that long?

How often have members in this club blown their motors while tracking? I was under the impression that the motor was built to take alot of punishment.

How much does the extended warranty cost and what are the details? i.e. deductibles, mileage/year limits etc. Also, I heard (can somebody confirm this or tell me I'm an idiot ) that just like buying a car, it's good to shop around as one dealer might give you a cheaper price than another on an extended warranty. In other words, the price is negotiable.

An extended warranty is an insurance policy. It has deductions, exclusions, etc. And often you have to pay for the repairs yourself and then get reimbursed.

Yes, they are often scams, The dealers sell them at inflated prices, then pocket the difference or get a kickback.

You can indeed shop around and look for the best one for your situation.

In general, think of it as insurance. You are buying catastrophe insurance (they are useless in the event of anything less, due to the deductables) and they are profiting off of the reliability of the car.

The main reason for losing your engine is a mechanical overrev, and I'm pretty sure the policies won't cover that. I guess they might cover the oil starvation issue (though they might say it is evidence of neglect) and they might cover the broken valve retainers issue (though they might say it is evidence of an overrev). It could be that all F20Cs blow up in seven years, and there just aren't any cars that old yet -- but I doubt it. Mainly these companies profit on the idea that almost any serious design flaw will show up early.

I'm adding the cost of an extended warranty package as part of my deal on a used '02 M5 or used '01 911. Why? Labor is expensive. Parts are expensive. Plus the cars show more evidence of across-the-board issues that pop up at anytime during the ownership experience.

But with the Honda, it's been dandy. Labor is cheap. Parts are cheap. No real history of major engine issues. My diff makes no funky noises, but then I haven't ever properly dropped the clutch.

It just works and works great. Sucks that I have had it so good now that I see what other sports car fools are dealing with from the Euro side of the game. It's almost comical.

Powered by Honda. A good thing.

I haven't heard of an engine blowing up while at the track, but a very few of us have used up our engines. Obviously the more hard miles you put on the engine the sooner it will wear out.

Take the money (payments) you would have spent on the warranty and stick it/them in the bank ...... if something comes up use it (if there's not enough, borrow and pay back at the same rate you would have been putting in to it in payments) in the end you'll be covered similarly but you will be rewarded if nothing goes wrong w/ an extra "free" chunk of money to burn (the rewards of shouldering the risk instead of pawning it off on the warranty bastards). Life is all about using your head, having self discipline, recognizing the cost vs benefit, weighing risk vs return and not being a fu<king pu$$y
