Oh, I suggest just turning it in to your agent and let them deal with it.

Even if all you do is call your agent for advice, it goes on your record. I'm not saying it is listed as your fault or anything, but it does get listed in your file (as a claim). Even if you are not filing a claim for money with your company it still goes in your file (for the record). Trust me I know. My ex was in the insurance business. Her grandfather is an insurance mogul.

Your agent is your agent... but they are NOT your friend.

Here's their logic. 'You have just been involved in an incident that at least potentially will require them to pay out.' Yes you weren't there, but your lifestyle left a vehicle parked where it got hit. It's that simple. Don't take it personally. It's just business. (Yes it sucks.)

No big deal you say? But let's say that next month you are a passenger in your friends car who gets rear-ended by someone else. (that's another claim in your record) Then six months later your car stereo gets stolen and you file a claim. Your insurance company can now say you have three claims. Raise your rates or even cancel you.

<- Was canceled several years ago.
Yes, my insurance only had to pay for my stereo. But they still cancelled me for having three claims in one year. Safeco SUCKS!
True. Every time you contact your agent about any potential claim, it does get recorded. Also true, SAFECO does suck (from what I've heard, anyway).

The bottom line is that you need to understand the details of your own situation. None of us can really tell you what you should do. We can just give you the benefit of the experiences we have had, and you have to decide how applicable that is to your situation.

Thanks for all the advice. I got an estimate today and it came to $742 for the damages. I'll see what the individual wants to do. If he has a $500 (or higher) deductible he might just want to pay it off.

I'll let you know what happens.

Well, thanks for the advice everyone. The individual who struck my vehicle came by this weekend and paid the repair estimate in-full. I guess there are some honest folks left in the world. If the repair ends up costing less than the estimate (I know, fat chance) I

Can't go wrong with cash. Unless it was Canadian.
