Default Houston, we have a problem

I was having a great time at Proformance today. There were only 18 cars, so they were just running the track green. Go on, lap as much as you can, come back off, take a rest, repeat.

Just before lunch a little light rain started falling. I had some tires on with very minimal tread, so I went home for lunch and also to swap tires. Came back. Rain was falling much harder, some standing water.

Lapped for a while, then came off. Put some more air pressure in the tires. Then we did a track walk thing at 3A/B. After that I went out and did some more lapping.

I had a couple of corrected oversteer moments in 8, but was overall doing OK for grip. But as I went through the kink, suddenly I was spinning. Not even sure what happened, except there was some standing water there which had been a bit touchy. I must have hit it while turning a bit.

Anyway, round I went. The back end tagged a wall very hard, and I was still spinning and sliding. The front end collected another wall (or further down the same wall) before it all came to a stop.

I never lost consciousness, and the airbags never deployed, but I bet they would have deployed if that first hit had been in front rather than in back. My helmet was slammed pretty hard into my seat's head restraint.

As far as I can tell, the damage is all repairable. Both the front and rear bumpers are trashed, the trunk lid is trashed, probably both front and both rear quater panels are trashed. But hopefully the driveline and main structure are OK. One wheel was broken, so the car was undrivable. But the engine still ran.

I probably have a mild concussion and a pretty solid case of whiplash, but no other injuries.

This was a big hit -- I'm once again very impressed with how tough our cars are and how much they protect their occupants.

But damn it all, this sure wasn't how I wanted the day to go.

Oh, and that redline beeper thing? Worked great! It will be a while before I'm using it again, though. #$%^!

I don't have a camera, and actually I'm not at all in the mood to post pics anyway. It's not like this is something I'm proud of. I just posted here to increase the collective knowledge of the group -- that kink is nothing in the dry, but watch out for it in the wet.

Ouch!

Glad to hear you're OK, though.

You're neck's probably going to be really sore for a while.

Good luck with the repairs.

Glad you're doing ok, Mike. Sorry to hear about the mishap, but thank you for the information.

As a track newbie, I need all the data points I can get.

Mike, Mike, Mike... had the same type of experience except on a public road. The car felt like this iron, mesh cage that just insulated me from any harm.

Rest up. Get some back cracker to work you over. Cheers, aight?

I'm sorry to hear about your incident, but you're ok, and that's what matters at the end of the day.

Now you've got an excuse to bolt on some cool aftermarket parts.

The whole "new" front straight had several puddles that caused the car to shiver and it went through them. But I believe the nasty spot that got me was a big puddle that formed in the whole left half side of the kink itself. I thought I may have been spinning even before the kink, but that doesn't seem likely based on where the car ended up.

I should have got the name of the driver of the black S2000 behind me. He may have seen it all.
