Speaker Upgrades
Hey Stuchot, did I see you before on Mercer Island?? I am the white/red floating around Downtown MI. I changed my speaker to a Boston Acoustic 2 way in March. The stereo is a lot better now consider we have a convertable. Let me know if you want to look at it sometime.
When did you get your Stook? There was a s2000 meeting last weekend that I missed. But I know some of the died-hard owner that do have new speakers also.

I was looking at BAs (6.1 I think) and Diamonds earlier last year. Both sounded great, however, I decided to sink my cash elsewhere. In doing the speaker upgrade I would have also put in a new amp.
I put in Sony 1621's (three way red xplod speakers). It's an easy install (info in the FAQ's on s2ki), improves the sound but doesn't make a huge difference.
IMHO, to have the stereo sound right, you need to add tweeters at ear level.

I am moving a large portion of my stereo equipment over from my CRX to my s2000. Since I am doing most of the work myself, I can either document the install, or you are welcome to join me on the days I am working on the car. My first task will be installing some BostonA pro series 6.51 into the doors. This is very much in line with what you want to do. Feel free to PM me.
If you are only replacing speakers and not adding amps, I wouldn't recommend touching anything. The difference in sound quality will be minimal at best, and a waste of time at worst.

Next time we have a meet, I'd really like to hear people's upgraded systems.
I've been considering the Sony 1621's that Guillaume has (they're pretty efficient, so they're a good choice to go with just the stock head unit). It would be great to hear them installed in an S2000 before deciding.
I'm also considering a bigger upgrade, with at least an amp and separates, maybe a new head unit, but I want to keep the dash controls working (and I'd like a cleaner solution than the Pinky/PAC infrared emitter).

I agree with GMan. You have to get that tweeter up. If not in the A-pillar than in someplace where you can tilt it up. I also think that if you are going to take the time and spend the money on better speakers than you should invest in a new amp to drive them. I think it is debatable about changing out the head unit, however.
My argument for the tweeters comes from a ride in a friend's Miata with the Bose upgrade, which includes two tweeters in the pillars, and it sounds fantastic compared to the stook. The Sony have plenty of bass as is but lack spatialization.
Also it looks like the stock Honda unit has extra outputs for the rears, which could be used to wire tweeters (the fader effectively becoming a treble balance).
Ted: we do need to compare the Sony vs stock speakers with a reference CD, I'm not convinced that it made a worthy difference.
