We all made it down without issue or interdiction by the LAW. 10hours of driving went pretty quick, especially since the sun is in full effect from Mid-Oregon on. Current Temperatures are in the air conditioning REQUIRED zone.
The Toyo's are really helping me... I am running within two seconds of Ted but 'ol Ray has turned into some possessed subterrain animal whose hit sunlight for the first time. I've clocked a best lap in the 2:26.xx range, Ted 2:24.xx, and Ray is starting to chew away deep into the 2.1x's. Ack, maybe 3 foot wide Michelins work after all. Chris Wilson is having a host of mechanical issues with both the NSX and S2000 so no times to update with yet.
Fastest S2000 laps are the realm of DavePk. He's kicking serious bootie with a 2:07.xx. Where the hell is this guy losing seconds?
We are cruising to a big dinner with all the track paticipants and then tomorrow is a second day of racing. Expect the times to fall even further as we all get our desert legs into shape...
Man I envy you guys for not coming down with you guys earlier! I'll be down by MOnday or Tuesday this following week, can we meet up and/or still hit the track Jerry?
I hope Ray's high-speed balst back from Sacramento International and Jerry and Mira's drive back from the Reno Hilton swimming pool were without incident.
Daryl and I had a great time on the way back. Ray and Kari, us and Ed and Jenny went from Reno over Rose Mountain back to Lake Tahoe. Pretty fun drive with some nice twisties, and beautiful views. We drove around the north side of the lake, where Ray and Kari left the rest of us to head back to Willows. After lunch Daryl and I split from Ed and Jenny on I-80, and took Highway 20 back across California, through Williams, where we stopped for milkshakes (you got us thinking of shakes, Ray).
Once we got west of I-5, route 20 became very fun. One of the best roads I've had the pleasure of as we descended towards the coast in the twilight. We arrived at Fort Bragg late Sunday evening, with no bars of gas. Monday morning we headed south to Mendocino, which is a quaint little arts 'n' crafts town. Then we started back north up Highway 1. There's a really fun section just before it joins 101 in the redwoods. We drove the Avenue of the Giants and stopped for a few minutes to enjoy the shade of the big trees. We had dinner at a great restaurant in Ferndale, the little town where they filmed "The Majestic"; the town is filled with cool Victorian houses and storefronts. We made it into Oregon by Monday night and found a neat hotel at the mouth of the Rouge River. The Classic Automobile Club of America, Northwest Chapter, was having it's convention there. The parking lot was filled with Studebakers, Dusenbergs, Cords, Hispano Suisas, Bugattis, Cadillacs, most of them convertibles. Maybe in 60 years, that's what an S2000 meet will look like to the young whippersnappers.
Today we headed up 101 to Lincoln City, where we headed inland to Portland and blazed up I-5 to home. It's about 10 to 15 degrees cooler near the ocean, so once we headed inland we had to put the top up and crank the A/C.
Hope all that gave you a taste of our little drive (just over 2000 miles). I'll post a few pictures eventually.
