Been working for the same manufacturing company for almost 19 years in sort of a client support role. I love the company and the people, but I've been in the same soul-sucking position for 15 years and it's killing me.
I understand about scary.
I understand about scary.
I just do it during my off time (basically daytime). I've been getting a lot of headshot work lately (although I hate it) but don't make enough money to do it comfortably for a living. I do a lot of food/restaurant photography, so that's my first step, and just got a gig with an indy record label to shoot their album art. I guess slowly, I will turn it into a full out business. I actually want to start my own "shop" for photography and retouching...employing photographers and editors, but that's at least 2 years away. In the meantime, Im just networking, building my client list. I am very proud of myself, as 90% of my business is recommendations, so I must be doing something right.
I say, don't quick your day jobs, and do it as a side gig. Once you have enough gigs where you NEED to leave your job, THEN leave it.

Great shots as always! Makes me want to go FF, but I'm going to need to earn more money first. Love the look of the 5D. I don't know what it is about the 5D, but its photos are so distinctive in terms of color, not just the depth of field, etc..
You're brave going photography full time! I'm having a lot of trouble landing steady jobs, which is why I keep my day job. Summer i'm going back to school (starting at Art Center Pasadena) and i'll be studying Ad Design and Photography/Imaging, mainly to gain experience faster in a controlled learning environment. Good luck shooting full time though! More power to you! The photography world is too saturated with mediocre wannabe photographers these days so it's always nice to see a serious photographer catch a break
