Been researching a bunch of tripods online. My requirements were that it be compact (less than 25"), sturdy, and be able to hold roughly ~15lbs.

Currently own the Bogen 728B with integrated pan/tilt head all-in-one, which is very easy to use and somewhat sturdy. But the head is non-interchangeable and the weight limit is about 7lbs. I've noticed with the 70-200 2.8 + 20D + grip + 430EX, I need to crank the lever very hard to ensure that the head wont slip. Also, when fully extended, the center piece will begin to slide down. Nice and compact, somewhat light, feels like an expensive unit, comes with a soft case, great for a standard lenses, but not so great when fully loaded. Oh, it's very well priced at $118 from B&H.

So now I'm i nthe market to move on up to a larger unit. I was looking at the the ebay dynatran ones sold by amvona that I've read about on the forums. Specifically, the A105T and was planning on pairing it with a bogen/manfrotto 488RC2. This price of this combo shouldve come in at about $200 depending on the auction close.

I use the Bogen 3021 BPRO (around 25" with legs not extended), which weighs around 5.5 lbs. Unless you plan on doing overhead macro shots or low-to-the-ground shots, there's no need to spend the extra on this model. The 3001 is very sturdy, too, and costs a little less. I've been looking at carbon fiber legs or aluminum ones that are little smaller (15-20") since the 3021 BPRO doesn't fit well on my Kata backpack (too tall, too heavy).

I have the Bogen/Manfrotto 3001 with a Cosmo ball head. I'm pretty happy with it. It's not too heavy, but heavy enough to minimize shake.

Manfrotto, Gitzo, Velbon would be my manufacturers of choice.

I'm assuming from Voodoo_S2K's post that Manfrotto market as Bogen in the US?

If I could do it all over again, I would have gone straight for the Gitzo and Acra-Swiss setup. My Manfrotto 3021n and 488RC has served me well, but I am looking for more.

Sorry, I plan on keeping it for whenever I need something lightweight and compact.
