Default Color Management

Ok, I'm sick of shooting a New Formula Red S2000 and then having to eye ball what I think NFR is because it comes practically Imola Orange. I shoot a Canon Rebel XTi and post process in Lightroom. What I think is most interesting is that the color looks much better until Lightroom fully renders the preview. That flicker when you first select a new image looks great, until it seems Lightroom applies a default color profile to it.

I stumbled across this link on Camera Calibration and Profiling and will be giving it a shot. Has anyone else with a similar work flow experienced this?? What have you done to correct it?

Have you calibrated your monitor? Start with a cheap hardware calibrator, like a Spyder 2 or Huey. That should get you a giant step closer to what you want.

Next, include a grey card in some of your shots, or use an Expodisc, to get near-exact color temperature for whatever light you're shooting. That red should no longer be orange on your screen.

I agree, Pen is 100% on the money... Another thing to keep in mind is if you plan to post your images on the net, don't forget to convert the final jpg (if you aren't already) to sRGB! If you do not, the Internet will not be able to render the colors in the extended gamut and your photos will look flat and lifeless.

I guess we'll have to wait and see. Because everything you guys have mentioned I've already done.

Monitor corrected with a Spyder 2 Pro courtesy of my company. I use my ExpoDisc religiously. Every ~1 hour or so as the sun moves or I move. Lastly, I do convert to the sRGB color space for web/screen use.

Every other color is SPOT on. It's just reds that are off, leading me to feel it is not a temperature issue.

Also, what about that "flicker" I'm describing where the color is pretty accurate until Lightroom finishes rendering the preview?

IMG_2496.CR2 -- I think this particular shot was without ExpoDisc, but manually set to Daylight because the 'As Shot' temperature was 5150. As Shot (5150) / Auto (5200) / Daylight (5500) in Lightroom all yielded more of an orange tone than the car was.

I don't want to hear anything about composition. I posted this one because of the color.

So my ColorChecker came in today and I'm feeling pretty positive about the initial results. I did a quick test and it took my test photos in the right direction but a bit too far...

I think the saturation is too high and the hue went too far in the correct direction. I'm sure it will take some fine tuning before I'll have myself some presets ready to go.
