Default Depth of field

I really like the depth of field I can get with my 50mm lens. This is just kind of a random shot that isn't that great but I thought I would post it anyways.

Fast lenses are great.. there is no doubt about it, but keep in mind that they are not their sharpest wide open.

How do you know where the lens "sweet spot" is? Just by taking pictures at various aperatures? This lens is the 50mm f/1.4

Lenses typical have a sweet spot that is usually 2-3 stops down.
