Default First Attempt at Panning...

This was my first attempt at panning shots, comments welcome. These were from a local weekly get together in Southern California I was at yesterday.

now i see them
First of all those are some hott cars

im not the best panner myself but i have a few suggestions, you have the background blurred which is good but the cars are also blurred which is bad, im guessing you werent using a tripod

So just keep practicing remeber to use a tripod or a monopod and fiddle around with different shutter speeds

Lets wait what Norm has to say, as far as im concerned hes the king of panning

Not a bad start but the cars aren't exactly sharp, though. The cars probably weren't going fast to get a decent pan; usually you'd have to have speeds of about 40 mph before you can get some background blur by using shutter speeds of about 1/60, which is about as slow as you can go with hand holding. It's possible to pan and go with 1/30 but the keeper rate isn't very high.

You don't necessarily need a tripod for panning. Monopod would be nice, but again not neccessary I think. I would shoot above 1/100 for handheld panning. Here is one of my favorite handheld panning shots @ GT Live VIR. Again, practice makes perfect.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I was shooting 1/80 of a second with no tripod or mono pod. It was a spur of the moment thing as I was leaving this get together some of the cars were leaving so I gave it a shot. The cars were also not traveling very fast as I shot them as they were accelerating from the exit of the parking lot. I will post up some of the stills in another thread if anyone is interested.

You've got some dust on the sensor.

Cropping off a little bit on the bottom would also make a subtle difference in the photo.; the vehicle would sit in the lower 2/3rds of the frame and it also removes the guardrail from the image.

Nice shots. It is pretty difficult to get just right isn't it?

Here's one of the better ones that I did last year:
