Default Going to Brazil

I will be taking a week long trip to brazil in May and was wondering what type of lens i should purchase/bring so i can be covered. I know we will be going to the Amazon so i want something that will allow me to capture most of what is around. I don't want to lug around 5 different types of lenses so a good everyday lens around town, maybe a 24-70 and a 70-200? or should i get the 100-300?

BTW, i have a Canon 30D

I'm heading to Costa Rica with a Canon 1D, a set of Kenko Extension tubes, a 77mm B+W Circular Polarizer, a Canon 24-105 f4L IS and either a Canon 70-200mm f2.8L IS or Canon 100-400mm f4-5.6L IS.

I'm still tossing the last two lenses in the air. For Costa Rica, I don't see myself taking photos in the evening and the sun rises/sets so fast a large aperture isn't going to make a big difference.

The real question is what lenses do you already have and how much can you spend? Or the really real question is how big money is Verizon making you these days

I'd go 10-22 EF-S for wide angle and some variant of the 70-200L, all depending on what you want to spend. If you feel the midrange is lacking, you could always grab the 50 1.8 for next to nothing (also weighs next to nothing, type of lens you throw in your pocket and forget its there), but I'd imagine the prime would go mostly unused. Personally since I picked up the two lens combination my 24-70 has gone mostly unused, YMMV.

When I was in Costa Rica a few months ago I brought along a couple of my lenses (50 f/1.4, 24-70 f/2.8, and the 16-35 f/2.8). The 24-70 was my good walk around lens, but since 70mm was my max I was really wishing I brought my 135 or 200.

The 70-200 is a good choice too. I've never used the 24-105, but its range seems pretty nice to use in all different kinds of situations.

My ideal selection would be the 24-70 f/2.8 L and the 70-200 f/2.8 L.

Jaykkub - you didn't feel the need for anything longer than 200mm? I'm thinking about picking up the 100-400mm f4-5.6L IS before going.

I take my 17-55 IS and 50mm 1.4 with me almost EVERY time I take a DSLR. (10-22 gets thrown in every now and then)

I don't haul big lens unless I have a specific mission in mind....

Actually I'm kicking around selling it. I think I'm going to give it another month (see if the newness of the other lenses is the real reason my 24-70 sits at home while my camera comes with me everywhere) before I make a definite call. If I do though you're first on the list.
