Yeah, I haven't really played with the cathedral pic other than to color correct. It was a hard shot as the altar was very overexposed and the ceiling was basically pitch black. I opted fo getting the detail in the ceiling rather than the altar, but I can play with the exposeure in PS.

If you had a tripod, what you could do is shoot in raw, expose for the alter and go up 1/2 a stop. when you bring it to the computer you selct the alter and darked it up the levels. You should have a better shot then.

you can also shoot in hdr as disclarry said

Both are good composition and interesting subject, but they could use some work in terms of PP. Levels would go a very long way for both pics. And as suggested, a cathedral is sort of a classic example of what works well with HDR.
