Default LENS help for 30D

I recently recieved a Canon 30D and it came with the 18-55mm lens.
I am quite happy with it but i know there are better out there. My budget is around $650. I want a lens that will perform well in still and motion shots. Any suggestion???

BTW i am a newb at slr's
Thanks
Dan

The lens doesn't have much to do with whether or not your subject matter is in motion or static. Ask yourself how far away from your subject matter you will be and then how much of the frame you want to "fill".

Next ask yourself what the lighting situation will be the majority of the time... The lower the light, the larger the aperture... ie: F/2.8 is larger than F/4.0

50mm's usually take the cake in that category.
