CS5 will be coming out in a few months, just FYI.
If you're considering CS4 I'd hold off a bit.

edit: correction, it comes out in two weeks.

Correction: the official announcement of CS5 is in two weeks. The actual release date is much later.

If you are actually considering between Lightroom or CSx, I'd suggest Lightroom. Tends to indicate that you don't know whether you really need the full capabilities of CSx. Odds are, you don't.

HAving used both, it comes down to comfort.. I am not a PS maven, nor intend to be one, but find LR to be very dulled down. The one thing that I absolutely love about LR though is that it allows the user to see all of their images (across multiple folders and drives) in one place without the need to leave and search for where they might have been stored. THAT is a great time saver.. But sadly, that is the only thing I like about the program and will be moving up to CS5 when it releases.

Yea i heard about CS5 when i was on there site. I might be geting a free copy of CS4 fingers crossed. I really just don't see myself spending $600 on a program that i only would use as a hobby. But if i can get CS4 for free the upgrade to CS5 will be alot cheaper.

Agree with the rest of the guys. Unless you have a specific use for CSx, and know photoshop, stick with lightroom.

However, as someone who has all four (CS4, Lighroom, Aperture, and CaptureONE) for light editing, CaptureONE is superior.

I personally feel that both applications do two totally different things. I use Lightroom to process my photos; correct exposure problems, white balancing and color balancing. I use PS for digital alteration, like removing items from pictures, skin blemish corrections, image size alteration and so on. If I had to recomend on I would recomend Lightroom. If you dont have a specific need for PS then there are free alternative such as Picasa or Aviary.
