Default New camera

Ok let me begin and just state that I have no idea about cameras. I've just had the a canon sd and just bought a sony cybershot t-7. But I want to get a new camera just to actually capture the picture better. I guess price range is from 500-1000$'s. I am going to take a photography class as soon as I get some spare time. But in the mean time, I want to mess around with the camera. Any suggestions for a novice like me?

If you're willing to put some time into the hobby, there are several entry level DSLR bodies worth looking into. If you want new: Canon 400D & Nikon D80 are the newest ones on the market. If you're willing to buy used, the Nikon D70s and Canon 20D are worth looking at.

If you want a point and shoot, the Canon S3 IS is one of the best on the market.

I would suggest getting a Canon Rebel XT (with the XTi version around the corner, prices should drop for the XT). Some can be had brand new for $600, but the image quality lies in the lenses. It'll definitely force you to learn every button's fucntions.

www.popphoto.com is an excellent resource.

In my opinion for the money you cant beat the Olympus e-500 2 lens kit. You get a high quality 8mp body with 2 very nice quality lenses, an 18-45mm and 50-150mm zoom lense. Be caustious though as all these cameras and this hobby leave you wanting more, but not like its a bad thing, hehe.

XTi (400D) is already out =)

I've seen the 300D (Rebel) go for ~ $400 used. The 350D (XT) is going for $500-580 and prices will slightly drop. Most DSLRs hit a basement where the prices level off. This can be seen with the D30 and D60, as it is with the 10D.
