bhphoto.com seems to be the gold standard for service and pricing. you'd do well to keep shopping there.

$1500 includes the lens and all accessories?

Well, Rebel XT/XTi and the 28-105mm with a 1GB/2GB CF, Bag, Extra battery would be under that price and that should be a pretty versatile lens. Not that great in low light though. I owned it with the first gen. Rebel.

XTi Body: $650
8GB CF Card: $80
Lenses: 50mm f/1.8 ($80 shipped), Tamron or Sigma 70-300 with a Tamron or Sigma 28-80 (Both can be found for $160 for the kit) This should cover a good amount of photos.

If you would like a better lens, most like the Canon 28-135 IS Which will run you about $415.

If I had to do it over again... I'd get the 28-135IS and the 50mm to start out. I'd then consider getting either a 28-300 or a 70-300 after experimenting with the qualities suffered from opting for the 28-300 over the 70-300.

Consider getting a 20D body. The prices are great these days

Thanks for the replies. What would a good all-around lense be for taking sencery shots on my trip to Costa Rica in a few weeks?

If it has to be Cannon, I assume you have glass for it already, thus your restriction? If so what do you already have?

Nope. I have a Canon XL1-S SLR video camera. I plan to use the "glass" interchangeably.
