Default Newb with a D40

Hey guys, I'm pretty new to whole photography game. I've always admired other people's pictures and I've finally mustered the energy to be proactive and buy an entry level camera. I bought my D40 with the 18-55mm kit lens from Joeyballs a few weeks ago and since then, I've acquired the 35mm f/1.8 (which I absolutely LOVE).

Thought I'd post some pictures I really like and get some feedback. I'm trying to get as much experience as I can before Senior Design consumes my life

I'm on flickr as gt_nfr if anyone wants to friend me

You might be new to the dSLR scene, but you have some great compositions there!

However, you are shooting in direct sunlight for the s2000 tail light shot which makes the upper right hand portion of the shot over exposed.

Also, I think the head light shot would look a lot better if the head light itself was the focus point rather than the "H" emblem because my eyes are initially drawn to the headlight when I see the shot.

Other than that, great shots!

Ok, im not as nice as the rest but its for your own good

Pic #1 why the angle? Until you answer Ill withold my critique of it.
#2 not bad nice light, would look better if it were posted larger.
#3 nothing going on, cluttered background and shooting into the sun is killing this shot
#4 no focal point at all both your foreground and background are OOF, what is this supposed to be a picture of?
#5 getting better, but you have a very heavy vignette on this shot and its slightly underexposed. Was the vignetting intentional?
#6 best shot of the bunch, good composition. You could improve the shot by changing the light source from the current right to left, to directing the light from the lower left to the upper right so that the shadow gets hidden behind the mug/monkey and it adds a catchlight into the monkeys black eyes.
#7 whats up with the crazy angles again?

Also. next time PLEASE number your shots

Like I said im tougher than the rest with critiques ,but its all going to help you in the future

zzzlippyyy,
Thanks for taking your time and giving me some critiques. To answer your questions:
1) I was at the park and wanted some weird perspectives so I decided to shoot some pics from what I think a small animal like a squirrel would see.
2)This was actually a pretty grainy picture because I shot this with my hand at high ISO so it looks pretty bad blown up lol.
3)I agree
4)I was trying to focus on the blades of grass and I tried to get close enough so the some bokeh but this was the most focus I could get the grass :/
5)The vignetting was intentional and as CU Nick pointed out, the picture would be much better with the headlights in focus.
6)Noted! Thanks for the suggestion.
7)See 1)

Thanks guys for the comments. I'm still a few weeks away from being swamped so I'll keep practicing in the mean time.

^ Glad you understood where I'm coming from and lose the crazy angles were humans not squirrels

On the blades of grass shot, you can still get the bokeh of the background. just open that lens up and walk back or forth until you see the blades in focus and than shoot. trust me at the distance the background was you will always get the bokeh.

Keep shootin , posting and we will keep critiquing!
