Default Nikon D40

Well I'm new to photography of course, I had Point and shoots but I'm finding that I'm not happy at all with the images. I'm looking at a starter dSLR; I've looked at the Canon XT but this was too small for my hands. I found the D40 to be larger and more comfortable in my hands. I would prefer the D80 but that's out of my price range I don't think I'll be utilizing it. My concern are the lenses. Going with the D40 I'll need to look for AF-S ro AF-I if I want AF.

Is this a major deal?

I would recommend the D50 over the D40. It is only a little more costly.

Well I've got the camera and am playing with it for almost 2 days straight. I made the mistake of playing with the D80. Big mistake.

The D40 lacks the top info screen and is not able to autofocus with the lenses without focus motors e.g the 50mm f1.8 (cheap but v. good Quality). Pick up a D50 instead....
At first I didn't really think the info would be helpful but it sure would be alot more user friendly. To make adjustsments I find it a bit annoying to look at the main screen. I'm going to return the D40 and maybe step up to a D50/D70/D80. Thanks for the confirmation guys
