i hate to make a stupid "is this camera good" thread, but im looking to buy my first dslr and was just wanting to see who was using a d40, just usernames would be fine (ill do the footwork), because im just wanting to get some sample shots.

another question, is the d40x worth the extra money? i know its bumped to a 10mp but is the picture quality that much better?

thanks in advance,

bryan

I have a D70, but I would say the D40 is a good DSLR entry camera. I wouldnt spend the extra on the D40x. I would spend a little more for the D80 or get the D40 and use the savings on towards a lens.

I have a D40, and I absolutely love it!

My step up from the Point and Shoot world, I have learned so much so fast.

The ONLY, and only complaint I have with the D40 is its lack of auto focusing prime and lowlight lenses, but they will get here in time.

Let me find some pictures for you.

EDIT: Took these within the 1st week of purchasing my D40 w/kit lens

If you want me to take some specific photos, do not hesitate to ask!

I still prefer the d50. It feels better in the hand for me, and you able to use more lenses, which obviously can be expensive. they are cheap on ebay now.

Go for d80 if you can.

i do really want the d80 and will eventually have one (or its replacement) but i just want something that i ca use to get used to the ISO, aperture, and shutter speeds adjustments. ive never had a dslr and dont want to jump in the deep end right off the bat.

I purchased the D40 as a starter dSLR. After playing with it for about 3 weeks, I quickly returned it for the D80.

I changed mainly for the easy of adjustment and the size. Also I would not be limited to certain lenses like the D40.

The D40 is a nice starter camera, but as someone mentioned before it is limiting on the lens end. I believe you can only use lenses with internal focusing. Moving up to the D80 allows you to use any F mount lens out there.

And yes the 10mp is better than the 6mp only because there is that many more pixels so pictures have a tendency to be sharper and the colors more brilliant. Nothing wrong with a 6mp camera, it is just that the 10mp gives you that much more.
