Default Photo editing

Right now, the only editing program I have is Photoshop Elements 2.0 that I got from my friend years ago. Getting an SLR camera finally, it will be time to upgrade my editing program as well.
So, what out there is good?
I don't want to spend $600+ on Photoshop; is anyone using the current Photoshop Elements 5.0? Anything else for under $150 that works well?
Thanks in advance.

Paint Shop Pro is pretty good. It does most of what photoshop does, and has some nice tools that are executed better than photoshop offerings, such as printing multiple images per page, batch-processing of files, and a few other tools.

Accept no substitute for Photoshop, and try not to settle for anything less than CS. Buy it used if you have to.

eBay, some local software stores (don't know if you have any of those kind of places - ours are all almost out of business), I've seen some copies on FredMiranda.com before.

There will be tons of copies of CS2 hitting the used market when CS3 fully rolls out

Everything else is garbage compared to Photoshop. You can purchase software from journeyed.com if you are a student.

Can you indeed use PS CS2 after it as been registered with Adobe? I heard that the program "phones home" for registration
