Default A question from an idiot

As I am off to Canada soon to take some lovely pics of trees, mountains and lakes I have read that a polariser is a key piece of kit to bring my photos to life.

Had a look on Ebay and I was faced with a huge range of filters, all different sizes (in mm).

Simple question, how do I know which ones will fit on my lenses? Do I need to get my ruler out?

Your lens will have the mm printed on the front of the lens on the outside ring.

Just to add a quick tip....screw the filter on lightly...lol..I spent 30 mins trying to pry one of my filters off my 50mm, i finally wedged the filter in the opening of at drawer....did the trick but i wouldnt do it again.

Wise words! esp with polarisers, given that they rotate.

An old trick is to wrap a wide elastic band round a stuck filter. This often lets your fingers get some purchase on it.

I accidentally pulled a polariser completely apart once trying to remove it after screwing it on too tight. Damn difficult trying to get it back together once that spring pops out but I managed.

I did the same thing in B&H the other day... because I wanted to see the difference between the normal profile vs the thin. Good thing the salesman is a friend of mine.
