Not really measured that way....I know thats how they measure the zoom on point and shoots, I eyeball conversions from mm to Feet or Meters

I suppose everyone uses their own method.

2.35x zoom

40 / 17 = 2.35x zoom

i have a nikon 18-200mm VR walk around.

that would be

200 / 18 = 11.1x zoom.

bigger the zoom range, worse the PQ.

but my 18-200 is awesome despited the fact that 200mm full zoom sux.
