Default Is this redundant?

I have the 18-135 kit lens that came with my D80 and I was going to go out today and but a new 50mm 1.4. Is it not necessary to but the new lens becuase my kit lens can be used at the same focal length? I could get a super wide angle instead but I was kinda leaning towards the 50mm. Thanks in advance.

Nope. The prime is fast and sharper so it has it's own uses, especially in less-than-ideal lighting situations or in situations where a zoom isn't required. If you have the space and ability to move your feet, the prime would be better suited due to superior image quality over your 18-135 lens.
