I recently starting shooting in RAW mode on my camera(was advised by another photographer) but it seems to be creating 2 files on my camera and also when I upload them onto my computer. It's a bit annoying as it's taking up a lot of memory on both card and computer.

Does anybody have any idea why this is happening or is it something I can turn off on the camera.

Bear in mind that I'm very new to photography

 

I know on Nikons (which means it's probably the same for Canons) you can change how the camera captures the photos and puts them on the card. You probably have the setting set to shoot one in RAW + JPEG Fine or something.

 

RAW + JPEG basic, but yeah.

Quick change in the menu. RAW is better for editing, but does make it a much larger file. If you don't edit, you have no need to shoot in RAW and should change setting to JPEG Fine.

 

Will eventually get onto the editing part of them but it's still a bit away for me I think. I was told that it's easier to edit in RAW mode so that's why I started shooting in RAW.

What camera are you using?

You should have in your menu an option to select what you want to save.

RAW + JPEG Basic means you are storing the photo in RAW format AND JPEG Basic. If you want to shoot in just RAW, find the option in the shooting menu that is just for RAW. If it is a Canon you can use this (page 58). I'm sorry, I'm not very versed on how Canons work so someone better might be able to explain it. I did find this. See if this helps.
