Default Almost sold the S this week.

I was parked in front of this big reflective window a couple of days ago and I noticed that one of my running lights was out. Thought to myself ........................... WTF! A burnt out light bulb for gawds sake! POS! Getting rid of this thing NOW! No way I'm gonna change a friggen light bulb on this car. I'd rather sell it.

Today, I checked it really carefully to determine which bulb is out. To my astonishment ......................... NONE! The running lights don't even come on when the switch is untouched. It was the reflection of my DRLs shining just so on one of the running light lenses that made it "look" like it was on, thus making me think the other one was burnt out.

This would have been the first thing to go wrong with my car in the whole time I've owned it. (I don't count things things that went on account of the mods I've done to it, which by the way, have been rare.)
Oh well, I guess I'll have to wait till the battery needs replacing before I sell it. In it's 5th winter now and the damn thing still works.

Reminds me of an old beater I bought many years ago.....'70 Chev Belair with 102,000 miles on it....only sporty thing about it was two doors! However, for $50 who can complain?

Well, I swear I worked on it on a seemingly daily basis for something like two years! I was finally to the point where I was going to grab the licence plate and hitch hike if so much as a bulb burnt out!

Well, for the next two years absolutely nothing broke on it...put close to 70,000 miles on it...think it heard my threat! LOL!

Eventually I sold it for a profit.....$125....only time a car appreciated in my possession. :^)

Now I bought a VW Scirocco winter beater so I don't have to drive my S in the winter.....and it is driving me nuts with stupid little problems and I have no desire to work on it whatsoever. I think this will be the last beater I own.

Is that a similar feeling, Dave?

'88 Scirocco anyone? 16v., 5 speed manual, Karmann model.

I know EXACTLY what you're saying. I will absolutely NEVER, EVER drive a beater when I've got a perfectly good working, new, fun car to drive sitting in the garage. An S2000 beats a beater anytime.

I drove my brothers Mazda3 home from work on boxing day. It was fairly cold outside, -24 or so. That thing didn't blow warm air until I got a block from my house (6 km drive home). And even then, on full blast, the air coming out of the vents was extremely weak. My S2000 will blow hot air after driving for 30 to 40 seconds, and it'll blow it out damn fast.

I just love driving the S2000 in winter.

That is interesting about the S's heater.

I found my previous Miata was the same......heated up faster than any car I've every owned.....still remember travelling across the prairies in -35 deg. C in my t-shirt and having to turn down the heat!

People used to ask if it was cold in the winter (I'm sure you hear the same thing about the S.... :^) ). My response was usually that the car was perfectly warm in the winter......."I just keep the roof up!".

Furthermore, the troubles with the beater have got me thinking about driving the S this winter......new, reliable (thinking about how much money I'll lose if I lose time at work), and, of course, a whole lot more fun to drive.

The thought also occurred to me that I did not lose much of the Miata's value over the 13.5 years that I had it due to driving in the winter (not all the winters albeit) and the rust was not overly extensive on it even after all those years and many kilometers......about 270,000 km. on the body.

Another similarity is the small battery.....even smaller in the Miata which made it a touch and go affair to start in temps less than about -30 deg. C. If it was plugged in, it would start in any temperature and immediately. I am assuming the S will be similar, correct?

Plugged in, I have started the S after sitting outside all night @-38*C. Not plugged, I have started it about -25*C. That was the night I discovered the outlet I used was not working. It didn't like it but is did start. It cranked really slowly but started after turning over a couple of times.
