Default Camcorder advice

I am in the market for a new camcorder...it is amazing what is available...also, a bit overwhelming. If anyone has some good thoughts on what to buy...brand name, media type, options etc. I would appreciate your advice. I have been browsing cnet.com for product reviews but they seem to be inconsistent.

Some background...I have quite a few 8mm tapes that I would like to convert to digital so I thought that a backwards compatible digital8 camrea would be best but now I see that you can do the a/d conversion in some of the MiniDV cameras....like I said, I'm not sure where to go with this.
