Good neighborhoods in Calgary?
Hi folks,
What area of town in Calgary should one look for accomodations?
Bachelor, no pets, no dependents likes peace and quiet. Near a bus station would be nice and garaged parking would be a bonus.
Anyone got a basement to rent out?
Thanks.

Are you coming here to vacation or a visit (hotel, motel)? Or are you coming here to live, in which case you're talking about monthly rental? What type of access do you need - University? Downtown business? Malls for shopping? Proximity to your work (where)? Do you want moderate rent in a mid-scale neighbourhood or low-rent, high density residence? Or are you on a "big ticket" budget? Do you want an area full of students? Are you looking to eventually buy? Answer these and I can better help you zero in on some areas.
Find an internet site for the City of Calgary and check out their transit map. If you stay close to the C-train tracks or one of the main bus routes, you'll be fine. The N.W. Tends to be slightly higher rent than anywhere else. S.W. next. The east side, you will find more reasonable rent but tend to be more high density. Of course the downtown is usually a higher rent and mostly highrises. Get in touch with VTEXTC and see how his property would suit you. Then you can consider neighbourhoods like Parkdale, Hillhurst, North Hill areas for quiet and moderate rents in the form of basement units. Garages may or may not be available.
Also, check the online version of the Calgary Herald classifieds or the Calgary edition of the Bargain Finder (also called Buysell.com). These may be a week old but will give you some ideas on rents and stuff.

Tommy,
In addition to what XViper stated, there is a company with whom I am familiar with who would be able to aid you in finding a property to rent. Like a realtor, they would drive you around and show you whats what, and who's who in the zoo until you find something you like. Their name is Gil Management and their number is (403) 266-3550. If you're looking for practicality, then as XViper said, both the NW and SW are great due to their proximity to LRT and buses. The same can be said of the N.E, however the area is not as desireable as some other parts of town.
17 AVE S.W and or Eau Claire are considered "trendy" parts of town, and the caliber of apartments/rent prices reflect this. Bankview is a central southwest community with apartments galore, and is a haven for partying students staying in Calgary on a temporary basis. Condos and apartments in that area are typically older, with lower rental prices, and a great central location to boot.
Hope that helps. If you need more specific info, be sure to ask.

Tommy,
I have never been at the tenant end of things so I'm not sure how Gil charges their clients. $600 per month is reasonable for a 1 bedroom place, however it won't be anything near the economy suite at the Manhattan Hilton I'm sure. You'll be looking in the region of $800-$1000 for something a little nicer in one of the more desireable neighborhoods in town. Nonetheless, $600 should catch you something run of the mill, and middle class, something that you're looking for I take it. If you're looking for something for December, I'd get on it right away.
Good luck

PS-Im asking $900 per month for my 1 year old 2 bedroom 2 bathroom condo which also has an undergroudn heated parking stall. If it intrigues you in the slightest, let me know.

Asif as a landlord nice
Where is your condo Asif, not that I am interested in renting, just curious. For the single lifestyle, condos are great, just make sure you live on the 1st floor. Those condo fires aren't friendly
