Default Importing a vehicle from the US

Well, with our dollar at parity, I'm tempted to buy a vehicle from the US.

Now, it depends on how much I'd actually save, but for example... a loaded G37 coupe is $50k CAD including duty and tax from the US, or $60,500 locally here in Edmonton.

(Obviously this margin could increase or decrease depending on what sort of negotiating I do with the dealers here and south of the border).

Are there companies that will clear the vehicle through customs for me? I don't particularly like the idea of having to (potentially) wait at customs for 3 days...

What are you waiting at customs for 3 days for? I've done it a dozen times this year and the who process takes me about 45 mins at both US and Canadian borders combined.

They're just saying you (could) be waiting up to 3 days at the border.

Obviously 45 minutes to an hour seems a lot more realistic, but you never know I suppose.

I know you're in this as a business, but if you'd be willing to do a detailed write up of what's involved, I'd be really appreciative

Is it pretty simple to buy a used vehicle and bring it back?

From the research I've been doing the last few days it seems to be.

You definitely need a bit of time on your hands to do all the little work involved, but it seems fairly straight forward

One interesting tidbit I've found is that there are only 3 car bands that don't honour US vehicle warranties in Canada:

Acura, Honda and Chrysler. Every other brand honours warranties NA-wide.

due diligence helps a lot.

The gentleman that bought my car and brought back to Calgary said
it was no pain at all. 45 min to 1 hour seems to be about right.

What are you folks waiting for? Get your dream car now.

cheers,
Bobby

Thanks Chris, good to know.

I'm test driving the G37 on Tuesday, who knows, I might not even like it. It's 3,800 damn pounds, might drive like a boat!

One thing to also remember on honda and acura is not that the warranty is void. If you take it to the US it will 100% be honored. You can also have warranty work done in Canada as well. the way it works is you have to contact Honda USA first and notify them of the problem. Then you can have the job fixed and you have to pay the bill up front to your local canadian dealer. You then submit the bill to Honda USA and should have a cheque in your mailbox in about 2-4 weeks. I have done this for a ECU failure and was no issue at all.

Interesting.

I wonder if it'd work the same way with Infiniti too.
