I'm looking to move into an E90 BMW but am waiting until later in the model year or for the '07s so they can look after some of the new model quirks.

We are talking about BMW here, I don't think the quirks ever go away, you must empty your wallet if you want them fixed.

Besides, I don't have access to a proven BMW service outlet here in the Comox area.

Just playing the devils advocate, I'm going to vouch for two of the "underdogs" so to speak. If you're planning on leasing/financing, MB has a great deal on the 2006 C class since a replacement is due next year. The new C350 with it's 268HP engine might be worth a look at, however will likely exceeed your budget. That said, the stellar lease rates might make it worthwhile.
I'm also a big fan of the Audi A3. It's basically a "nicer" GTI, and starts at a reasonable price for the 2.0T which isn't exactly a stormer in the HP department, but does have the upscale looks and features of the marque that its lesser brethren (GTI) doesn't. It even comes with 4 doors, and would make a functional, albeit classy family runabout.
Just a couple which came to mind.

The A3 is awesome looking eh! It probably would be perfect (especially in the quattro version) except for the price. Maybe I could convice my wife that is for her...that may aloow me some more spending room!
I had a 04 TSX and absolutely loved it. Only reason I got rid of it was because it was the wrong type of car for this stage of my life. You can bet I'll be looking at it or the TL again once the time comes.

colour? Got some pics?

2002 Maxima SE, 6 speed, OEM limited slip diff, 90k km (10k left on powertrain warranty), Mobil 1 5W30 since the break-in period, HID, heated seats/steering wheel (going to miss that). The colour is Tungsten Blue.
Redline MTX-90 in gearbox, HP short throw shifter, Enkei ZR1 (17x7.5"), Toyo Proxes FZ4 (235/45/17) 80% tread left. Comes with extra steels/winter tires. Nissan hitch (just used for bike rack).
Two things that will need attention at some point. The break pedal gets firm after the car has sat for 8+ h and you put your foot on the brake when you go to start it. I think there is a small leak in the "brake booster". There is no degredation in stopping power, that's why I haven't looked into it yet. One of the fog light lenses is cracked but I do have the spare.
There is no leather or sunroof. Also got rid of the clear corners.
