Default Roaming internet access

If I were to buy a laptop, how would I connect up to the internet if I take it travelling? I'm on Shaw Internet at the moment. When someone goes out of town with their laptop, how do they get internet service? You see hotels advertising internet phone connections, but who do you dial? How do people do this?

Dave,

The hotel gets an ISP to provide service to the hotel.

They wire the rooms with Cat5 so you don't need to dial (if they have high speed service - which most do now). Just plug in your laptop and your pc will be assigned an IP address from the ISP.

When you purchase the service, they allow you on the internet...it's like buying a temporary service - the purchase is usually good for 24 hours then you have to buy it again. If you don't buy it...they usually just allow you access to thier subscription page.

Some of the better hotels and airports will also have wide open wireless service. You simply boot up and your computer will find a wireless access point. Usually this service is free.

Some? How about all of them!

Most laptop motherboards now ship with wireless cards built right in.
...didn't know that!

I read in some trade rag that some airports in Canada and US have wireless
access points but I've yet to see them for myself.
Pearson (in Toronto) definitely has wireless access available...
