I too got rid of my land-line a few years ago, and have never looked back. There are plenty of great plans out there, most of which provide unlimited weekends and evenings. During the daytime (when it costs money to call... depending on how many daytime minutes your plan provides), people are generally at work, and can just use the land-line there.
I haven't had a telemarketer call in years.
Actually, part of me wants to get a call, so I can try out the famous telemarketer line used on Seinfeld (I know you guys know what I'm talking about )

I've wanted to do the Seinfeld thing so bad, but I just can't bring myself to say that to someone.

Somebody post the Seinfeld thing. I was never a constant viewer.

Here's the jist of it.
Ring. Ring... you answer.
You - "Hello"
Them - "This is so-and-so from yada-yada"
You - "Look, I'm a little busy right now. How about you give me your number at home, and I'll call you back later"
Them - "I'm sorry sir, it doesn't really work like that"
You - "Oh, because I guess you don't want people calling you at home"
Them - "Well... yeah"
You - "Then you know how I feel"
Quickly hang-up on them with a smug sense of satisfaction

Is there anything we can do to limit or stop the telemarketing phone calls? I know in the US they have a national do-not-call database. Do we have something like that up here?

Without exaggerating I get at least 3 to 5 calls a day from telemarketers (sometimes more than 10), some of them coming as early as 9 AM.

I'm thinking about getting rid of my home phone completely.
Dude...man up! I'm usually polite when they call and simply cut them off in the middle and say I'm out the door but if they called me ANYTIME in the A.M., I let them have it.

"Are #uken kidding me? You're calling me at this F#$ken time? Tell me you're joking...PLEASE TELL ME YOUR F&(KEN JOKING!!!!"

And then they hang up...pretty simple

tried yelling, tried the Seinfeld thing (gets old too fast), tried convincing one guy to let me speak to an english speaking coworker -he never did understand
I've had my best luck just calmly asking for my name to be removed from the calling list. Many (6 or 7 in ten) simply apologize and hang up
perhaps policies in place? I had one lady get VERY short with me as she referred me to the do not call list mentioned earlier
we have very few calls now but some just don't stop

Oh man I lost it on one last week. It was my day off and I wanted to sleep in. Phone rings at 9:30 am... "what? do you know what time it is out west? no, the sun does not revolve around ontario"

something like that.
