Default Bare Metal

Hey everyone!

I know I might get some flak for this, but I've been really contemplation stripping my S2 of it's paint and just let it as a "brush" steel look or something similar. I'm just getting really tired of trying to protect the paint and just make it look somewhat decent when I have the time. Well obviously the biggest issue to stripping the paint is rust. I've done a little looking online to see what I can try. I've read that I could use a product called Gibbs to protect the metal but I'm not sure.
Does anyone have any suggestions lol? I drive the S2 daily all year around here in Alaska. As far as winter driving goes, we don't throw down salt like some places, the state just throws down a mix of gravel/volcanic rock I believe. If I did go through with stripping the paint, I would be leaving it as such indefinitely. I would not be repainting her anytime soon.

Thanks for the input.

If you are tired of maintaining the paint I think you'll hate trying to maintain bare metal. It would be best to do a clear coat or something over the metal.

oh really? There isn't something that I can just strip it down and coat with something every 6 months or something like that lol. But as far as a clear coat goes then, I mean wouldn't you need a primer so that the clear coat has better adhesion?

bump, does anyone else have suggestions or inputs? I was thinking that if I was able to do this with relative easy that I would try to make like a "battleship" theme with the S being bare metal. Have like pop-rivets and stuff of that kind of look if you understand what I'm saying.

hmmm. so now your car is worth 1/2. Try a metal coloured wrap instead- its reversible, and protects the paint underneath from the rocks etc on those Alaskan roads. or buy a bike- less paint to maintain. Or just leave the paint alone- stop washing, waxing, and maintaining it...at least then you won't have perforation of the metal. Or plastidip it.

but, make your money, spend your money, lose your money. do what you like.

good luck

I suggest a wrap as well, then you can just replace damaged panels as required.

I appreciate the input. I did have the car Plasti Dipped when I was doing that. But long story short, some jerks stole the S and they peeled the dip off and now I don't have the means to do the dip again. The only real reason I have a notion of stripping the paint off is just the fact that I have other places to prioritize my money at the moment and can't really afford getting the S wrapped or re-dipped, and plus i'm just being lazy about taking care of the paint. I was just thinking that if it was somehow possible to strip the paint off and not have rust develop somehow lol, that it would be one of the cheapest solution besides just leaving it the was it is now. I mean sure I could just let the paint go to crap, but I don't want the S to look like crap. I just thought that bare metal look if possible, would look pretty neat and different that's all.

As a side note this is the product that I came across while searching for a Bare Metal protectant:

http://www.gibbsbrandlubricant.com/

Has anyone used this stuff before? I've read that people who are into Hot Rods and leave their car in Bare Metal fore use this stuff to prevent rust? This product just sounds too good to be true in all.... So I'm just a bit skeptical lol.

I think you can get better answers on hot rodder forums about the Gibbs.
