DIY non-HD lip
Hi All,
I was looking for a simple front lip for my AP1 that dropped the look of the bumper just a little bit. I looked around and the only thing I found "simple" was the DIY home depot lips people were making. I thought about it, and it seemed to be very flimpsy. So I set about make one for myself.
I made two. The first one was made using polyurethane rubber with a hardness of 40. I made a straight L-shaped mold with poured liquid polyurethane. The lip was .250 thick. I formed it to the bumper with double sided tape and the standard bolts that was already at the bottom. I had a gopro mounted to see if it would bend at speed. Sure thing, it deflected more than .250 inches at 70mph. I glued on gussets, and it helped, but it didn't look good from the bottom. (this makes me wonder why people with home depot lips don't mention deflections...the home depot rubbers are almost foam like and no where as strong as the polyurethane rubber I was using.)
I didn't like having the gussets..so i set about making a stronger one using polyurethane plastic. This time, I made a mold in the shape of the bumper, since the plastic would be way to stiff to form to the bumper. I don't know alot about woodworking and definitely don't have fancy machines/tools. I kept the L-shape since it was the simplest shape I can make with the tools I have. I increased the total height of the lip from 1" to 1.25". The liquid poly was purchased clear, but I dyed it black. I had to do some sanding and trimming afterward. I ended up painting it with plastidip.
Here's the result. It's definitely not fancy...but it's simple and very stiff. It looked new a track day.

Wow, at first I didn't even notice it. Which I consider a good thing, I think a lot of the lips are a bit too big. My bumper would scrape at my old house, so I never bothered to get one, but since I've moved, maybe I should reconsider.
