Default Factory Paint

So I'm new to the S2000 world and Honda/import world for that manner <-- as far as owning them. I have an '01 NFR and the paint is particularly soft.

Does anyone have any concrete evidence and/or experience of why Honda chose to use the paint they use for these cars, or was it just certain years?? After all, the car was designed for the track where you would expect more chipping, etc. That and only a base coat on the mirrors?

It's definitely the original paint. Ive corrected paint on a few of these and I have noticed that it was particularly soft as compared to other manufacturers and other Honda makes and models for that matter, as I should have said.

Typically the more expensive higher end cars tend to use the harder higher quality paints.

I cant recall every year S2000's paint I've ever worked with, but it seems to be a trend in there somewhere with soft paint.

I was wondering if anyone had any hard evidence as of what brand paint they used on these cars and any other thoughts on the manner.

I believe the red has no clear coat. Red hondas bleed on the towel when you wax them

Soft does not necessarily equate to being bad. The newer scratch resistant clears are actually engineered to stay soft which makes them more durable.... would you really want a hard, brittle paint?

As for what type of paint they used, who knows, even if you found out the paint used at OEM manufacturer levels and in vehicle refinish are two different types of paint.

All I know is my S2k gets rock chips at a depressing rate. Every time I wash the car new ones pop up. It's bad enough I'm considering respraying the hood and covering the front half of the car with Xpel.

s2ki.com

If I did the above link correctly...that explains the base coat clear coat sort of.
