Default Protecting the hood over-winter

Hanging fire on buying a new hood (US ..roof) (we're looking at around £800 in the UK) for at least another year or so and so trying to 'save' the tears in the usual places and also minimise water ingress over winter. Initial thoughts were a tarpaulin over the entire car but think that might not be a good idea as chafing from the wind will end up rubbing the paintwork etc.

So current thoughts are some sort of cover (probably jury-rigged plastic builders sheet and eyelets) over the roof.

Anyone else done similar? Car will be outside during winter.

I think the best thing to do (aside from structured covering) would be a well-fitting quality car cover.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'd thought of that but was wondering about condensation underneath the cover keeping the car damp/wet.

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys.

In the end I discovered this range of top covers on eBay UK from Buzz-Topz and bought one. The quality is superb and I really wish I'd bought one sooner. Held on by magnetic strips....fingers crossed they will be strong enough for our winds!
