Rust!
Hi guys, i was under my car today sniffing around and i found the crash bar behind the rear bumper is really rusty. Does anyone know if this bar unbolts? Or is it spot welded on? I would like to change it in the very near future. Thanks!
If you get into an accident, you'll regret having removed that bar and your insurance company might not be happy either. Without it, any impact is going to do a lot more damage, even at low speed. The Japanese cars don't have the USDM crash-beam (though they do have a bar there too, just smaller) because of different safety regulations in Japan.I know someone who removed the beam on their Civic and then one day accidentally rear-ended someone. Their car's front end was caved-in, and it wasn't even that serious of an impact.
Yeah true i didnt think about insurance.
I still need to change the part as the rust from the beam is starting to spread to the car where they join. The beam is beyond treating and repairing now =(

I'm willing to bet 90% of them have some rust on them, mine did. If you remove the rear bumper it doesn't take much to treat the rust, I sprayed mine down with a rust paint and then coated it in rustproofing material. If I had to do it again I would just blast it with that black rubberized rockerguard material and that should be a permanent solution.
