Default front brake pad life

I'm up in the snow up northeast and I just noticed my 08 is swerving left when braking and not braking well when the brakes are cold. My used s2000 had "new" pads installed before I bought it 4000 miles ago and there's about a mm or two of space between the caliper and the disc on the outside. i'm guessing that my pads are shot and that this aint normal brake pad life? only thing i can think of is that the traction control or stability control brake the front wheels or they're adjusted wrong.

at this rate i should buy a whole crate of front pads...

My front pads on my '03 lasted more than 50,000 miles. I changed them at 60K even though they showed approx. 50% wear.

I've never tracked my car and drive less aggressive than average. I don't know what's typical of a street only car though.

I'd make sure the rotors aren't warped and then monitor the brakes carefully.

Brake pad life can vary among pad manufacturers. Some used car dealeships put crap autozone/carquest/o'reilly pads in just whatever works to say "new" and pass safety requirements. You should be able to get 20K miles out of OEM AP2 pads, or 30K~ish out of OEM AP1 Pads.
