Default Rear Brake problem

Hey guys,

Just did rear brakes on the S, and I've noticed a strange occurrence. Both sides suffer from the same thing, the pad is only making contact with 3/4 of the rotor surface. I can tell this because there is rust forming on the rotors friction surface close to the rotors hat. I stripped the rear brakes today to re-do them and wire brushed all the rust down on the carriers, made sure the pins were not mismatched (smooth pin in the top notched pin in the bottom) and after driving and bedding in they STILL are not applying pressure down on the entire surface. You can easily see that the pad is indeed passing over the entire surface but not making contact when you apply the brakes.

Has anyone out there encountered this and found a solution? Does the cross pattern in the piston have to line up a certain way at all? I'll try to get some photos of the rear brakes up asap.

did you get new rotors? or get them turned? They may have been wearing irregularly with your old pads.

I've had a similar issue for a while now, with slightly uneven contact on the rotors and some extra temp generated on one side. This has not changed through replacing pads, calipers and rotors, as well as cleaning of the slide pins.

I did have some success swapping the carriers from side to side, so in my case I think the problem either lays with the carriers or the pins. May or may not help in your case but it's easy to try.

Make sure the grooves on the piston are lined up with the nubs on the backplate of the pad (the one of the grooves has to be perfectly vertical). If they aren't then the top of the pad will be the only thing to make contact with the rotor until the pad wears down further.

^x2 very common for the diy'r to forget and just throw the fresh pads in without aligning the piston.
