Urge Designs and Ohlins
Hey guys - I am a lurker on this forum but I have been reading and studying a lot on here and I wanted to leave a review because of the fantastic experience I had with using Urge Designs https://urgedesigns.com/
What drew my interest to Urge decisions in the first place was the extreme rigor and care they go through to explain their products and the reasons behind choosing hem This is a company that is clearly passionate about what they are doing and it comes across in their effort. The effort they take to describe details and information on each product, the care they take in responding to emails/followup and just the amount of time they are willing to spend talking with you on the phone. Their website is informative, and not just a list of parts. You learn about your car, its strengths, its limitations by reading through their product descriptions. This impressed me. They didn't just want to sell something, they wanted to educate their buyers to make the right decisions for themselves.
I called Patrick a hand full of times before purchasing any of the product he sold. I was immediately impressed with Patrick's immense knowledge of the s2000 but perhaps even more by his overall technical engineering knowledge. Every recommendation Patrick made to me was well thought out and he really knows the details of these cars.
After I bought an air filter for the s2000 last month I got the itch to make more power and mod the vehicle further.
In discussing my goals with Patrick he suggested getting the suspension dialed in, instead of power adders. Based on this, I purchased the Ohlin's DFV kit and Patrick recommended the stiffer spring rates of 12/10. https://urgedesigns.com/?page_id=3025
Since I wanted to get the 10% discount and I somewhat regularly track my vehicle I also bought the fluidamper for the vehicle. https://urgedesigns.com/?page_id=175
Patrick was awesome throughout the whole process - he got my invoice and parts out immediately after I placed my order. He followed up with me several times during their shipment and when they arrived he confirmed their arrival with me. Each time I had a question or needed confirmation regarding something Patrick responded to the email within the hour - which is incredible to have that kind of support and dedication.
When I read through this forum one thing is clear and that is there is very little consensus on anything. Do you need a bump stop kit? Is an AP2 subframe better? K&N or AFe filter? Can you get Ohlins without hitting your bump stops? Do you need rear cups? Do the v2 versions of the Ohlins suck? Some members that post only add to the confusion by not listing the context that may only be relevant to their situation. There were many times I needed to reach out to confirm everything I ordered would work and I didn't need additional parts. Patrick not only assuaged my concerns - he did it by explaining step by step how all the pieces fit together and how everything is really context dependent. So yes the Ohlins can run out of travel but if I set the preload correctly not earlier than the stock suspension would. It was reassuring to have a subject matter expert explain that yes everything was going to work and also WHY it was going to work.
I will save my full review of the suspension until Buttonwillow in April but I am really glad Patrick guided me toward the suspension over a header or exhaust. I am already enjoying the car much more and the car is more playful, more settled and I as a result am more confident and relaxed. My initial impression of the car is that I love it. I set the dampeners 10 clicks from soft, so 1/3 as hard as possible and the car immediately handled better, felt more composed on roads, but just made me more confident in the cars road holding ability. The car is more fun and comfortable.
I look forward to building a relationship with Urge Designs and while I'm sure most of you already know about Urge/Patrick - I did want to leave a review as thank you for all the knowledge and help Patrick provided and to pay it forward to this forum, particularly for those new members that might be lost or overwhelmed with the opinions, biases and factually incorrect information that coexists with all the great info on here. Urge is a great resource and having someone with an Engineering background answer my questions and provide suggestions gave me piece of mind on my purchases, not only that everything would work, but work well.
If any of you are doing the NASA Buttonwillow Event in April I'll be in the AP1 yellow s2k, come and say hi!
